The importance of diet

What is a "diet"?
People all over the world talk about diets, and usually they refer to an eating plan intended to help them with weight loss. But actually, what people don’t know is that diet refers to all the foods that a person is used to eating. What we are interested in is what kind of food and what amounts of it are consumed on this diet. The more nutritious and balanced the diet, the better, and that directly reflect on one’s health.

Why should our diet be balanced?
A balanced diet means eating from all food groups and types, and not less important - in the right amount.
There are many benefits to a balanced diet. First, there is no single food that contains everything the body needs so it is very important to consume a wide variety of foods. Second, with a balanced diet one gets the right amount of vitamins that the body need, which was proven to keep the body and especially the heart is a healthy condition, thus preventing numerous short term and long term illnesses. Third, which is what many people are after, healthy eating usually keep the body weight within a normal range, which results in a better quality of life.

A few facts about health
  • Thousands of people die every year as a result of heart diseases and other illnesses that are generally related to unhealthy diets. Many of those lives could be saved with the proper healthy lifestyle.
  • Millions of people in the western world (and not only there) are overweight. Actually it is estimated that one in five people is overweight, which is considered mainly because of unhealthy eating habits.
  • By keeping a healthier diet, one can protect himself from as much as a third of all illnesses, including cancer, diabetes, heart-related disease and many other diseases.
